Our Visit to Griston Bog

On the 16th of May the whole school visited Griston Bog in Ballylanders Co. Limerick. It was a very enjoyable trip where the children engaged in lots of activities throughout the day. The children learned about the history, geography and science of the raised bog by exploring each of the components that developed within a lake of meltwater after the last ice age. We even learned about the many birds and other animals such as frogs, newts and lizards which are native inhabitants of the bog. Unfortunately, even after looking long and hard we didn’t get to see any of the lizards.

The activities during the day included:

  • Time travel through the stages of bog development
  • Probe and measure the depth of the bog and test predictions
  • Use quadrats to determine how common sphagnum moss, the bog building plant, is at Griston and to learn about fair testing
  • Spot signs of the season
  • Bird watching: observation skills using binoculars
  • Pond dipping: observation skills using microscopes
